In Life and Business, Just Do the Right Thing

SDB Inspection 70Ok, Jayme Soulati has goaded me into another post. Dangit. I have a gazillion things to do today, a pitch for new biz at noon, a press release to write…but here I sit, writing a post. In a hurry, no less.

Why? Because I feel compelled to do it. I am so sick of reading about the ridiculousness that is the world these days and wonder why people don’t just DO THE RIGHT THING.

In business and in life, it’s not that hard. Strike that. It must be hard, or more people would do the right thing more often. I have three specific examples that have really “gotten my goat” lately. One, is painfully obvious, but the others may not be.  Do add your own in the comments below so I won’t feel like I’ve just had a moment.

  1. Sandusky, Paterno, Penn State, et. al. If the powers that be had done the right thing to begin with, when they knew it, this whole disaster could have been lessened (not avoided). We all would have been shocked, heartbroken and saddened, but we would have respected the actions of a few men who chose to do the right thing. Instead, we’re appalled at the inaction of many.  What makes me even madder, is that we’re focusing on the “so called” harsh treatment so quickly handed down to Penn State (treatment richly deserved), when in reality we should be focusing on the lives of the children that were destroyed by one man and the many others who chose to ignore his atrocities.
  2. Agencies who forget that it’s about the client. I’m thankful for the work I’m getting lately. I’m frustrated that it comes at a cost.  Here’s what I wish would happen. I wish that we (marketing and pr pros) would all just do the right thing: work hard for our clients, tailor our services for their unique situations, be mindful of budgets and know that a job well done results in long lasting business.
  3. Media Manipulators. I’m sorry, but the way to ‘bust’ someone that you think is doing it all wrong is not to go out and do the very same thing you’re accusing them of doing. Did I lose you? If you think someone lies, or corrupts a system, doing the very same thing in an effort to ‘expose’ them doesn’t make you a credible source for all that is good and right with the world. Oh wait, this has all been a stunt to promote a book.

This sort of behavior needs to stop. We have a whole generation of folks who are watching us. A generation of people who think fame comes because you have a baby at 14 or you drink yourself silly and say stupid things while posting it to YouTube.  Now, they can see that fame comes from lying.  This generation need to know that doing the right thing is still an option.

Reshaping the truth to protect or promote yourself; building a business by stepping on others and trying to see just how much you can make off someone; lying to get yourself in front because you’re too impatient to do it the right way…this needs to stop. It’s time to do the right thing. In life and in business, there really shouldn’t be any other way.

Amen. I especially love #2. It's not sexy, but it works. It's a wonder why more agencies/consultants don't approach things that way. Oh well - more for us ! :)

Who is going to disagree with doing the right thing? Not I.

I have a little saying that I repeat when I am baffled by human behavior. It's the only thing that gets me through.

The only point I'll make is - does the younger generation really care about what any of us do? Sometimes it seems like they're impervious. As much as I believe in them.

@jennwhinnem What's the saying? I want to hear it?

And I agree with @Erin F. in that the next generation or two watch more than we think. Not just that, they absorb or file it away for later. That's why I think it's important to at least try.

@EricaAllison  @Erin F. I'll tell you on FB, it's not nice to say on a blog.

I'm not a "younger-generation-hater" for the record. Was genuinely wondering how much they care.

@jennwhinnem  @EricaAllison Based on some speaking I've done with junior high kids, some of them care and don't mind admitting it. Most of them, though, are trying to play it cool. They don't want to be called out by their peers.

@jennwhinnem I think they pay attention to us even if they or we don't realize it. Weren't many of us impervious when we were the younger generation? I'm guessing the older generation said the same thing or something similar about us.

@Erin F. Just going based on how I was! Didn't care what they had to tell me...but hmm, did watch their examples. Interesting. Oky.

@jennwhinnem Maybe I was a weird teenager. I paid attention to what people said and if their actions matched their words. :P Once I figured out if they were the "real deal," I either became impervious or receptive. I guess I'm still like that in many ways. Maybe it's the introvert in me?

Erica, I applaud you for writing this. I'm beyond frustrated myself, for lots of reasons. It feels like we're all just shoveling against the tide, doesn't it? Trying to stop a flood with a handful of sandbags? But we can each do our part and lead the way.

A young friend of mine shared this on Facebook today: "Wrong is wrong, even if everybody is doing it. Right is right, even if nobody is doing it."

How awesome it is to look around at the other members of the PR Justice League (your Tribe) and realize, "These are really, really good people. Every one of them." What a GIFT.

@New England Multimedia  Thank you, Michelle! This is a really, really good group of people. I feel lucky to have bumped into you all and found such kindred spirits. Let's all do what we do best and keep doing the right thing when given the opportunity to do so.

I'm glad you wrote your rant. We were talking about some similar concerns during a panel discussion of The Dark Knight Rises last night. The end does not justify the means.

@Erin F. So sad. I get even sadder when people bring up their pocket park issues (avante garde/in your face marketing with this Bozo PR stunt OR gun control with the Dark Knight tragedy) rather than discuss our loss of lives, honesty and integrity and what this all means to us as a society.  :(

@EricaAllison @Erin F. Oddly enough, gun control wasn't a topic discussed. We talked about some of the different thematic elements, such as hope and the nature of mankind. It was that talking point that seemed somewhat relevant. Some characters responded to that nature by imposing more darkness and brokenness.

Oh, at least I'm good for something...teehee!! Your value as a blogger is missed and needed. My goading is because I'm "doing the right thing." Heh.

That said, indeed.

I believe strongly once we reach a certain age in this country and in life generally, eyes wide open. We see others' faults and horrors and poor examples they're spreading amongst our innocent youth; yet, we have no ability to solve all the issues these poor jamokes face.

We can only ensure that our own children have a solid foundation of love, a roof, an education, respect, and love.

Thanks for coming back -- a blog in a pinch is better than no blog at all.

@Soulati | B2B Social Media Marketing Thank you, love! This really is pissing me off, esp Ryan Holiday. All of 25 is he? Thinks he can rule the media world with his mad skills of manipulation? I've never been a fan of American Apparel (where he cut his teeth, apparently) and this sort of approach just reinforces that tacky behavior.

Now, off to prep for my pitch at noon. Muah!
