Climbing Out of the Social Media Rabbit Hole

As a solo business owner and often stretched to her limits mom of two, I can relate when someone says that they don’t have time for social media. After all, it takes time, right? At least if you want to do it right.

What I’ve seen happen, and have felt first hand, is that often times we devote so much time to it that we either burn out and fade away or we lose ourselves in the proverbial rabbit hole.  Either way, we’re left wondering what was it all for? What did we get out of that time spent online?

I’ve certainly gained tremendous value from my time online. I’ve also come to realize what’s a good use of my time and what’s not and as a result, have ‘retooled’ how I spend my time on social media and hanging out in the ‘sphere in order to boost my business.

Not to spoil the video, here’s what I’ve figured out so far:

  • You really can’t be everywhere at once, so don’t try.
  • Focus on where you target market is and go there.
  • Resist hanging out in the echo chamber. It’s ok to get your ‘chat’ on with like minded people, but if you’re looking for new business, balance that time with time spent communicating with another group – your potential clients.
  • Not sure if your clients or your friends are visiting your blog? Check those analytics!!
  • Use the analytics and measurement tools to help you get out of the rabbit hole and regain focus (i.e., generate content that matters to your target audience).
  • Remember to enjoy the ride! ;)

I’d love to hear how you do it? How do you make your time count and still provide value to your audience?  Would you like me to give examples of how to use the analytics to generate new content?

Erica, this was the perfect title for me today as I make my slow return back to the social media world. I will employ new boundaries and, in the case of my blog, I'm going to try to let it be less instead of more. I realize that sounds counter intuitive, but in my little corner of the world, it makes sense. I've learned a lot over my 90-day hiatus. Mostly, I've learned that this--this social media space--isn't essential. I am here simply because I miss it when I'm not. No analytics, no social element of a divinely inspired business plan. I'm just going to be here when I can be out of the rabbit hole. Because sometimes, life's events drive us back down there for our own safety.

@MimiMeredith Glad to be of service, Mimi! I completely understand where you are! I've been there and have been reflecting quite a bit lately on how I spend my time in social and how I use my blog to enhance my business. At the end of the day, you're right, social media isn't essential. Like you, I miss it when I'm away, but not just one or two days away...more like a week away is when i start to miss it. That tells me I don't have to kill myself to be "on" all the time, but instead use it to suit my needs and in your case, those might be business or personal. Good luck in your journey, Mimi! Glad to see you here, my friend.

@EricaAllison Excellent observation about the day vs. week (or in my case...months!) away as a personal gauge. I am glad to be back, as well, and wish we lived around the corner from each other so we could meet for wine and the official founding of the Two First Names club!

The best part of this discussion is the fact that you know exactly what you are doing online and why. Thanks for sharing this post my friend - definitely great food for thought especially for those of us trying not to lose ourselves in the mechanics of social media.

@anthonyablackburn Thanks - it helps to know where you want to go in order to chart your course to get there! Cheers!

Love this. This has been something I've been thinking about a lot recently. Quality over quantity has become my mantra for time online.

@Ameena Falchetto I sense a LOT of people thinking along these lines. There's only so much we can do, right? And that so much we do has to equate to tangible benefits at some point or we'll become resentful of the time it takes away from our family, our lives and our business. For me, if it doesn't enhance or draw new business in, I have to really think about the time I spend on it, if at all. Thanks for the kind words and RT, Ameena! Always great to see you.

A couple of years ago, I got A LOT of flack because I don't attend the social media events in town. In fact, someone recently said to me, "Wow. You don't go out much, do you?" The fact of the matter is, I DO go out a lot and I travel a ton, but it's to meet clients and prospective clients who, unfortunately, are not the social media crowd. It's easy (and fun) to get sucked into the echo chamber, but if you're not doing business there, you have to be disciplined enough to say no. That or never sleep.

@ginidietrich Oh, I like sleep too much to go without it for very long. I've tried and it makes me really irritable and less than productive. So, something's gotta go...and it might have to be the metric ton of time I was spending on social and not on my biz. You really should get out more, Gini!

I think it is really tough to measure ROI with as much detail as some of us would like. Analytics show a lot but they don't always provide details on what the lurkers are doing/saying.

@TheJackB You're right, Jack. I talk about those analytics A LOT, but I also understand there's an intuitive nature to what we do, esp in your blog and that we must honor them both. You speak of lurkers often...makes me feel 'watched'. ;) Thanks for stopping by - enjoyed your blog is boring post. Read it on my phone while I was putting my 3 y.o. to bed. I sit in a chair in her room while she drifts off. Great time to catch up on my thoughts or blog posts.

@EricaAllison You are being watched- we all are. Every time we look at our analytics we come across "proof" that there are more visitors than commenters. The lurkers that I find most intriguing are those who visit regularly and don't comment. I often wonder who they are and what interests them. Glad you enjoyed that post. I have been known to use that time to do the same as you.

Hi Erica, I'm sure you've noticed that I'm around much much less than I used to be. Why, because I simply had to re-prioritize where I was spending my time. Since starting GrowthEffect[com] I've been even more busy. But the secret is that I've been developing the biz since about last May. I Love your suggestions about using Analytics reporting to understand key data points. That's everything. Anything we can do to be more efficient is of optimal importance. Love your vids. You have excellent delivery!

@Jk Allen Thanks, Jk! Yes, I've noticed, but I've also thought you were doing just what I've done and that's refocusing or re-prioritizing. Did not know about your biz, although had my suspicions and yes, can tell you've been at it for a while! I can't wait to hear more about it...will check it out tonight. Thanks for the kind words and the visit, Jk.

Now that I've 'liked' almost every comment w/ excellent points on time, support, networks just let me say - THIS!!!! This is why 'you' - my closest Internet friends - are seeing 'less' of me. It's not that I've forsaken you or disappeared into a sinkhole, it's that I'm trying to employ #3 - and step away from the insider's club so that I can make progress w/ point #2 (though that's been more of a "seek, but they're all well hidden" game). Like you, I've never been shy about the fact that I'm out here for business. This is work, I've put a lot of time and effort into that work; fun ride but it all hasn't 'worked' out as expected. (Blog draft pending.) I am also trying to drive traffic and interest my way, and one day when I fix my RSS [teeth gnashing expletives here], hopefully the blog helps towards that end. I'm also not letting myself feel the 'pressure' anymore; if I don't blog or tweet one week, the world actually will not tilt of its axis.. and I'm cool with that. FWIW.

@3HatsComm I totally dig it, Davina! I'm thrilled to see you here and believe me, totally understand the absence and the methodology! No, the world will not tilt off it's axis, but you will be missed. I think it's really refreshing and an evolution of sorts to see this sort of 'shake out' happening amongst our little group. Does everyone go through it? I don't honestly know, but my guess is no. I think we are similar in that when we get into something or embrace, we're all in. We're also practical peeps and recognize that sometimes getting all in doesn't always work the way we hoped it would. Again, awesome to see you, D!

@EricaAllison See @ginidietrich comment above, all this talking about PR and social media is by.. other marketing types. I will be around, just more lurking as hopefully I get more work done too, and still have a little time for me.

@3HatsComm Davina, I relate to your "fun ride but it hasn't all 'worked' out as expected." Ditto that, my friend. Cheers! Kaarina

@KDillabough It's that one missing piece and it's felt so,close, so long.. I just gotta do something different to get there.

Erica, I love your videos. I am constantly feeling the need to structure what I do online vs, the project work. I think of it this way: What activities can I be doing that have the greatest impact? and I truly appreciate and agree with your comment about why we are all here; to make money. Building relationships is part of doing that. Doing what you love is part of doing that. However, you make a fine distinction, and that is focusing on where your sources of revenue are. The friendships we make along the way are the icing on the cake! Did I say cake?

@Lisa Gerber I agree, Lisa. Relationships are a huge part of this process for me. Meeting our good buddy ginidietrich back in January was the shot heard round the world for me...that's when the relationship party started and it wasn't until this summer that I began to realize I needed to buckle down and get to work! Kind of like freshmen year in College...party, party, party until the grades are sent home. ;) I've made some great friendships here, some have even led to work (like Jayme @Soulati | PR for example). I'm now at a point where I'm honing in on what really drives revenue and what enhances my own PR and marketing - and that's a really good feeling! Thanks for coming by, Lisa. Thanks also for the video comment - I love doing them!

@EricaAllison Was it only this past January?!?

@Lisa Gerber Oh, and yes, CAKE!

Erica this is great to remind people. So many people think they need to do it all when really it's a waste of time, especially if your target audience isn't there. I say this exact same thing to those who are just starting out with social media. I always end with, you need to think about how thin you want to spread yourself cause if you're going to participate there you need to do it correctly, which takes time.

@jennimacdonald Hi Jenni! My apologies for the delayed response...I've been cranking out some work! ;) You're right, if you're not focused, and try to be everywhere and everything, it is a waste of time. I think that's why so many people give up or say it doesn't help their business. It's impossible to market to EVERYONE - why try to do it with Social Media?

Great post, Erica, and filled with wisdom. Everything about social media begins and ends with goals. If we're here just to chill out and find fun people to chat with, that's what we'll do. If we're here to build relationships with potential clients, to drive traffic to our websites where our sales message awaits, and to expand our referral networks, then we have to think in those terms while we're being social. Our goals will define everything else. I use a lot of different tools, too many to list here, but the goal is always to find my target audience(s), listen to their needs, build relationships with them, share our expertise, and drive traffic back to our website where our sales message awaits. It's very targeted, thoughtful, and deliberate for the most part, and pays huge dividends when done with our goals always in sight. At the same time, it's good to balance being targeted with just having a great time! Social media is a 24/7/365 network of networking events. Have fun, but make sure you're at the right networking events for your goals. If you're a dog trainer looking for business, don't waste your time at a networking event for people who are allergic to dogs. ;)

I give up trying to break my comments into paragraphs in LiveFyre. UGH!!

@NEMultimedia Thank you, Michelle! You crack me up with the paragraph breaks - breathe...it's ok! ;) I love what you said here: 'drive traffic to our websites where our sales message awaits'. That's GOLD. That's where so many of us fall down on the job. We're so busy putting content into the world to bring people back, we forget that key step: the right message for the audience that reads it! Love that.

I think many would definitely benefit from your offer to demonstrate how to use analytics to generate new content. I think keeping focused online is as important as being focused in your real life interactions and engagement. I find that when I'm feeling overwhelmed I need only check out how others are managing their time and see if that might (with a few minor adjustments) help in my specific case. Looking forward to the forthcoming examples re: analytics my friend. Cheers, Andy

@DonovanGroupInc You're so funny, Andy! I'm glad you caught that little offer. It's a teaser for what is to come and yes, I'll be happy to do it. Great talking with you this morning!

Erica, I'm certainly not down the rabbit hole but, as we've discussed among many of us, there's a huge shift happening as many of us evaluate where we're at and where we're going with "online". You're always spot on (yes...pun intended) with your references to measurement and analytics, although I must admit, simply figuring out how to post something, tweak something, back something up or upgrade something seems like a never-ending story that occupies much of my attention. And I think those of us who value the friendships we've made and colleagues we've connected with also realize that, like @Marcus_Sheridan and you said, it's business first. If we're not driving business on our business site, there's a problem. So bravo to all of us who have the courage and commitment to adjust our sails as the winds shift in the direction of even more successful business growth. Cheers! Kaarina

@KDillabough Thanks, Kaarina! You're right; there is a shift among us and I'm glad to see it, quite honestly. As I was talking to Andy from the @DonovanGroupInc this morning, we both agreed that you can definitely learn from your colleagues, but you also need to find folks outside your circle to engage with (clients, referrals, contrary opinions) in order to make the experience that much richer. It's also not necessary to talk about how much time it takes - do what you have to do online and then move on to deal with your daily life. We'll all be the better for it and in my opinion, have a more sustainable model to work in. @Marcus_Sheridan

Great points Erica. But do you know what drew my attention the most from what you said in the video? It was when you said, "I've been very upfront about my goals with this site." The reason this statement made me stop is because shouldn't that be everyone's goals if they own a business and give value to readers? Like you said, not including people looking for friendship, we shouldn't have to apologize for putting food on our tables. Yet, not withstanding, I think there are many that act like a business/money focus online is a somewhat bad thing....which is nuts IMO. Not sure if I'm making sense but I do appreciate your thoughts very much Erica, and I think your direction will only lead to more business on your end. Keep it up, Marcus

@Marcus_Sheridan Hey Marcus! Thank you for the support - as always. I agree, many people act like it's a bad thing to say you're online to make money. That's why I specified that my message is for folks who are online for business reasons. Have you watched Gary V's video from the recent Inc. 500 Conference? Powerful stuff, but what he said that resonated most for me is that social media (and all the many platforms) are but one vehicle for your overall marketing strategy and for him, part of the thank you economy that he's pumping up. Don't get so caught up that you forget why you're here. As always, you make perfect sense, Marcus.

The echo chamber... you mean when you, bdorman264 and soulati write about the same topic in the same day! I was actually laughing when I got to yours because of the way my reader is setup, I actually read your three posts in a row. :) Too funny. More seriously, you all make great points. I am actually working on trying to systematize the commenting part, becoming a little more efficient and making sure I don't miss people I want to support, but also getting out to other areas. That being said, it is never ending... any plan with social/blogging has to involve limitation, and the word NO. Take care!

@adamtoporeksoulati I'm outsourcing my commenting; do you know there are some pretty good deals for this? Unfortunately I didn't get the same deal when I rented my Avatar but I'm working on that.........

@bdorman264 Ha ha. Let me know how it works, Bill!

That's funny that you, Jayme and I were on the same wavelength this weekend. You make a good point and I think your strategy is solid in just using your platforms as a 'tool' but also allows your prospective customers know where to find you. It is certainly not the 'end all'. It was very easy in the beginning just to hang out and trying to gain credibility on the social side, but most of those people are in our bubble too and not our audience. As long as we know that and act accordingly, there is still plenty we can learn from being in social. Primarily, what is working for some and what is not. I feel good with where I am right now and hopefully you are getting there too. Glad you found your video....:)

@bdorman264 I know, it's funny how in sync we were! Must be because 11.11.11 is approaching. ;) You're right - there's so much we can learn from maintaining our social presence and engaging where it counts. I'm feeling good where I am now, too, Bill! And this one was a new video that I shot today. That one from Friday is completely gone!!

seriously. You both copied me. Even though Bill posted first and I went there to get a link and saw he invaded my mind and then I saw Erica and well it is just plain old stealing. @EricaAllison @bdorman264

@Soulati | PR@EricaAllison Imitation is the highest form of flattery, right? Trust me, I don't have an original thought in my mind; I will copy anybody's stuff............:)

@Soulati | PR@bdorman264 I'll have you know that this was just a different version of the original video that went bye-bye 3 days before! ;) I think it's because you're observant and a trend watcher and Bill and I just write and say whatever comes to mind. Voila...worlds collided.
